Since 2009 Jewish Circle Theatre has presented new plays, new stagecraft, and new talent to the Bay Area. JCT has introduced a rich variety of of productions and theatre-related discussion and education, including original plays, children’s theatre, playback theatre, English language adaptations of Israeli plays, as well as "Bama Ivrit," community acting classes in the Silicon Valley and in the East Bay.
From the outset, without the benefit of community funding and support, two passionate leaders, Ofra Daniel and Roni Alperin, and an enthusiastic group of volunteers have built a theatre that captivates audiences.
Dramatic material is created and composed by Jewish Circle playwrights or selected and nurtured to production through a process that depends on the richness of Jewish and Israeli culture for its meaning and impact.
Today Jewish Circle Theatre comprises a troupe of approximately 30 professional and community actors, musicians and choreographers, who have found a common medium and realized their common artistic aspirations working together.
JCT performances entertain and educate while leaving a pleasurable and durable memory of a meaningful and positive experience. Our compelling, non-dogmatic and thought-provoking programs engage Jews from all walks of life with differing levels of commitment, regardless of background and affiliation. We present Jewish culture dynamically so that it may spark new perspectives on old traditions, and new takes on old persuasions.
Through our work on stage and in our classes, we encourage participants to seek knowledge and to build connections, strengthening a sense of pride in their Jewish identity. Our theatre presents live, riveting theatre which is imbued with the rare potential to engross both affiliated and unaffiliated community members and to address multi-generational audiences throughout the greater Bay Area.
After operating on an ad hoc basis since its inception, Jewish Circle Theatre has now begun the process of formalizing its organization in order to move toward becoming a leading Jewish theatre company. Fortified with dedication and excellent training, strong professional standards, and imbued with Jewish culture, Jewish Circle Theatre has the confidence in its ability to gather the doubtful, attract the unaffiliated, and develop a bridge between the diverse Jewish communities of the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Jewish Circle Theatre joins and will continue to collaborate with a variety of Jewish organizations. Current performances have been sponsored by the Consulate General of Israel, JCC East Bay, Addison-Penzak JCC, the Bureau of Jewish Education/Jewish Learning Works, Stanford University, WZO, PJLibrary, Preciseq, as well as by local synagogues and schools. JCT values collaborative alliances with Jewish organizations and views these partnerships as essential for community outreach, integration and success.
